Modules

058 Dealing with fire incidents

Scope

This module is about developing the relevant level of skills, knowledge and understanding to enable effective response to incidents involving fire. It is suggested that this module includes a number of "sessions", each capable of being accessed/delivered as a stand alone section. These will include: Hazards and risks within incidents involving fire, including those affecting the environment Range, type and purpose of extinguishing media, agents and techniques The range of equipment and resources used at incidents involving fire Behaviour of fire Personal protective equipment at fire incidents Range of equipment used at fire incidents

Skill Objectives

Managing common hazards and risks involved in fire incidents: Identify hazards and risks associated with fire incidents Demonstrate appropriate methods and techniques to minimise risks to self and others in relation to common hazards and risks associated with fire incidents Demonstrate use of range of equipment and resources used in fire incidents Predict and estimate the likely behaviour of fire for each of a range of given scenarios - each involving a combination of structural, material and combustible item components

Knowledge Objectives

Types of hazards and risks associated with fire incidents
Action and control measures associated with management of risk in fire incidents
Capabilities and limitations of types of equipment used at fire incidents
How to access additional resources to support response to incidents involving fire - limits of authority
Characteristics, development and behaviour of a range of fire; to include working knowledge of:
- the combustion process within a range of fires and the contribution made by different fuels to fire growth and development
- the positive and negative effects of elements of structure upon fire development
- characteristics and effects of flashover and backdraught conditions
- methods and effects of ventilation on the development of a range of fires
- control measures and actions to minimise risk in fire situations
- roles, responsibilities and limits of authority of self and of crew members at fire incidents
- lines and methods of communication at the fire ground
